| A
lot of areas in the Philippines have a lot of agricultural
potential. However, these are mostly untapped. The local government
does not have the resources to develop all these opportunities.
In Munoz, Nueva Ecija, the local government conceptualized
the Muñoz Agricultural Science City program to concentrate
on the improvement of scientific endeavors among member institutions.
This can be achieved through cooperation and the sharing of
resources.
The
local government was able to partner with Central Luzon State
(CLSU), which is the most distinguished academic institution
in Central Luzon. In addition to that, 16 R&D Centers
or Centers of Excellence in the municipality were also contacted.
These are the Philippine Rice Research Institute, the Philippine
Carabao Center, the Farmers Training Institute, the National
Seed Center, the National Watershed Management Center, the
Freshwater Aquaculture Center, the National Farm Mechanization
Center, the Regional Crop Protection Center, the Casecnan
Multi-Purpose Irrigation and Power Plant Project, the National
Small Ruminants Center, the Soil and Management Center, the
Regional Science Teaching Center, the National Entrepreneurship
Center, the National Training Center for Teachers of Agriculture
and Related Disciplines, the Center for Rural Development,
and the Ramon Magsaysay Center for Agriculture Resources and
Environmental Studies.
Looking
at these partners, it is very evident that the municipality
would benefit from the wide range of initiatives each partner
would be promoting. This program aims to transform the countryside
into a huge learning laboratory for technology transfer, rural
development, productivity, and food security. All the farmers
of the municipality benefited from this program and are now
very knowledgeable on the new techniques of agriculture.
