The town of Buluangan in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental
lies in the coast of the Philippines. The main form of livelihood
customary to the residents of this area is fishing. The
fishing industry in this barangay not only is the main source
of income of the town, but is also the source of seafood
to the rest of Negros Occidental and even to Cebu. However,
this is hampered by the increasing destruction of the docks
and of the boats and homes of the fisherfolks brought about
by the typhoons.
To address this, the Barangay Council made a deal
with the Sangguniang Panlungsod to allocate P3.75 million
for the rehabilitation of the rundown fishport. Plans were
then made to construct a 204-linear-meter fishport. This
project is inclusive of lighting facilities, railings, and
shed houses. Soon after, the construction of the fishport
started.
As soon as the fishport was put into use, the fisherfolk,
having access to the improved docking facilities, were able
to increase their income by 25 percent.
